Student Placements, Collaborative Projects & European Exchange Opportunities.

The programme seeks to promote strong links with industry in order to give our students a sound understanding of the ‘business’ of design as well as producing creative graduates.

In order to do this we have established a number of options within the third year of study which are intended to give students a range of professional experience. One is the option to elect for a professional placement of approximately 10 weeks during the second semester (early February through to the middle of April).

The other option is to undertake a shorter collaborative design project of around 4 – 6 weeks. Whilst the placement would take place within a company the collaborative project would be carried out at Grays with briefing and direction from a participating company.

Would your company be interested in participating in this programme either by offering a student a placement opportunity or by providing a collaborative design project?

If you would like to explore these possibilities further please e-mail the Programme Leader: c.craddock@rgu.ac.uk.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP’s).

KTP’s are the Government’s premier “knowledge transfer” mechanism providing the framework and resources to support company-academic collaborations. KTP are currently supporting 900 companies throughout the UK, 120 of these in Scotland.

Both large companies and SMEs (Small to Medium-sized Enterprises) are eligible, with 80% of Programmes involving SMEs.

KTP operates by building partnerships between companies and academic institutions. The partnership develops a Knowledge Transfer Programme focused on meeting the needs/solving a problem of the industrial partner through technology transfer.

Companies typically use Knowledge Transfer Partnerships to help them to:

  • Develop new products or improve existing ones.
  • Increase efficiency through improved business
    processes.
  • Enter new markets.
  • Increase the company’s skill base.

Knowledge is transferred via a recent graduate working within the Company with mentoring from an academic expert.

Financial support is available as a grant, which can cover up to 67% of the programme costs.

In order to qualify for KTP, a Programme should:

  • have clear deliverables
  • be at least 18 months work
  • lead to an increase in profits
